Accommodations

Here is a list of all the places I stayed! I have rated each of them and added a short review. Booking can be tricky! Some reservations can be done online. Some sites are easy to use while others don’t translate well from Japanese. A few accommodations must be booked via phone, I recommend asking a host to call ahead for you to book. Also please remember any are cash only.

Day 0: Oasahiko Shrine

Day 1: Temple 1

Overall: 10/10 Food: 10/10 Price: ¥13,000 with 2 meals

Day 2: Temple 5

Overall: 7/10 Food: 8/10 Price: ¥7,500 with 2 meals

House was old and spooky but in a cool way. The host made a bath for me when I arrived. It was a real family experience eating dinner with kids doing their homework in the corner, and grandma helping with dishes.

Day 3: Temple 10

Overall: 6/10 Food: None Price: ¥4,000

Self check in procedure. Rooms are basic but clean. Not a ton of bells and whistles but a decent place to sleep. No meals are offered but there is a large kitchen to use if you bring food. Not many restaurant nearby but plenty of convenience stores.

Day 4: Temple 11

Overall: 8/10 Food: None Price: ¥4,000

This place gets major points for location. Since the hike to 12 is difficult, this location at the base of the mountain is ideal. No food offered but restaurants are a 40min walk into town. Ramen/dry foods available for purchase if you need. No privet rooms just hostel style bunks. Owner is super helpful!

Tips: Ask host to ship your bag ahead. Plan to pack plenty of food for tomorrow’s hike. Visit Temple 11 the day before + get your stamp so you can start the climb before 8am. Go to bed early.

Day 5: Temple 12

Overall: 7/10 Food: 8/10 Price: ¥7,900 2 meals

Location is a must. One of the only stay options at the top of the mountain near 12. Book this one early it tends to fill up! Hosts offer a trip to local bath house (I couldn’t go with tattoos). Meals are very filling and I enjoyed eating family style with other guests. I was surprised how fast the WiFi was!

Day 6: Temple 13

Overall: 10/10 Food: 10/10 Price: ¥7,500 with 2 meals

Great location steps from Temple 13. Rooms were some of the largest and nicest of the trip. Host is a friendly and boss lady matriarch who I really respected. Food was amazing I remember delicious salted cucumber and fresh fish.

Day 7: Tokushima

Overall: 5/10 Food: None Price: ¥5,000

This Pod style shared dorm hostel. No Food available but kitchen to use and restaurants nearby (including a great Ramen spot). Bedding could have been better. Bathroom and shower were clean. Just a basic place to rest and wash.

Day 8: Katsuura

Overall: 10/10 Food: 9/10 Price: ¥8,000 with 2 meals

Once of the best memories of my trip. Husband and wife hosts are so cute and welcoming. They speak no english and have translators on their phones that are often very incorrect. We laughed together so much. Home is new and modern. Dinner was fresh fish from the creek nearby and veggies from their garden. It wasn’t the most delicious but I loved the experience of eating such authentic fresh food!

Day 9: Temple 22

Overall: 6/10 Food: None Price: ¥5,000

House was a little old and rundown but room was large and bed was comfortable. A real family experience I got to chat with a cute kid. Host was so kind she heated up the dinner I brought and delivered it to my room. I felt so welcomed and warmed by the hospitality who cares if it isn’t super fancy.

Tip: I should have booked an additional stay the night before. It was too far to walk from my previous stay at Katsuura. They did not offer meals at the time but now they do.

Day 10: Temple 23

Overall: 5/10 Food: None Price: ¥3,500

Dorm style shared room hostel. Great location next to Temple 23. No Food available but kitchen to use and restaurants nearby (including a great chicken spot). Bathroom and shower were a little dirty. They have a cool bar but it is only open on weekends. Host speaks amazing English. Very affordable, you get what you pay for.

Day 11: Mugi

Overall: 10/10 Food: 9/10 Price: ¥25,000 with 2 meals

I really splurged with this one. I wanted to stay in a fancy place with a view after all of dorm stays. This place really delivered. Beach views and very peaceful. Dinner was a multi-course experience that included lobster and some of the best beef I have ever had. The ladies at the desk even helped me by calling in reservations down the road. Also the shared bath was great.

Tips: I took a bus from here to the next accommodation

Day 12: Temple 24

Overall: 10/10 Food: 10/10 Price:¥14,000

Another luxury stay. Expensive but worth it. My room was by far the largest of the trip including a run room, patio, living room, bedroom, toilet room, and bathroom. I had an amazing view of the ocean facing the sunrise. Service was fantastic they made my bed during dinner. If you like to drink the host is very into sake and can recommend pairings with your meal. The food was fantastic I can tell the chef really cared.

Day 13: Nahari

Overall: 6/10 Food: None Price: ¥8,500

Ended up here because everything else was booked up but I was pleasantly surprised. So much attention to detail you can tell its run by a woman with style. Bed was very comfortable. Sadly WiFi didn’t reach up to the bedroom. Host sells beautiful craft Yuzu products in the lobby.

Day 14: Aki

Overall: 2/10 Food: 1/10 Price: ¥7,500 with 2 meals

Don’t stay here unless you have to. This was the worst food on the trip, I wish didn’t add on the meal package because there are decent restaurants around. Two bandaids floating in the public bath. Stained sheets and everything in the room was dirty. The crosswalk below the building was chirping all night so I needed to wear ear plugs.

Day 15: Kochi 1

Overall: 8/10 Food: 8/10 Price ¥17,500 with 2 meals

Large high rise hotel with nice clean rooms and privet toilet. My package came with dinner at the all you can eat BBQ place across the street and an impressive breakfast buffet. I was bummed I couldn’t use the bathhouse with my tattoos but I got a massage instead that was wonderful.

Tip: I should have booked an additional accommodation the next day around temple 30 or downtown Kochi. I had too much distance between here and the next accommodation and I couldn’t make it without transportation.

Day 16: Kochi 2

Overall: 7/10 Food: 6/10 Price: ¥7,700 with 2 meals

Great stay! The older woman host is super sweet and her granddaughter who helps translate is a joy. The young girl even did my laundry for me! Room was decent and came with a fantastic view of the water. Food was good but not breathtaking.

Tip: I was expecting to get a Taxi in the morning to make up for lost time yesterday but its was out of Taxi range. The next day was too long to walk I recommend adding another accommodation after this around temple 35.

Day 17: Temple 36

Overall: 10/10 Food: 10/10 Price: ¥25,000 with 2 meals

Fantastic location steps from Temple 36. Expensive but worth it. Rooms were amazing with large privet bathroom and views of the mountain. Yet again I was bummed that I couldn’t use the bathhouse with my tattoos, but it looked amazing. Meals were fantastic but felt a little lonely eating such a big multi-course meal alone. Cute beach nearby.

Day 18: Oma

Overall: 7/10 Food: None Price: ¥7,500

A very normal stay. No food available but tons of restaurants nearby including an amazing chicken wing spot. Room was great and clean. Shared public bath was great. Shared bathroom but I had a privet little sink in my room to brush my teeth and fill my water bottle. Overall great option.

Day 19: Temple 37

Overall: 7/10 Food: 6/10 Price: ¥8,140 with 1 meal

Amazing location steps from Temple 37. No dinner, only breakfast offered which I admit wasn’t very good. Amazing noodle spot nearby. Host was very kind. I had a really big room but walls were thin and I was often woken up by noise from other guests. Shared bath was large and clean with a great vanity area to blow dry hair.

Tip: I wish I would have gotten lodging inside Temple 37 but they were full.

Day 20: Ohana

Overall: 3/10 Food: 5/10 Price: ¥5,000 with 2 meals

This is a difficult one for me to review. I accidentally booked the wrong date at Maaru down the road and I was left stranded without a place to stay. The host asked a kind guest to share her room with me, and saved me from sleeping outside. I will forever be grateful. I became a part of the family and played with the host’s daughter for hours. However, not the best stay. Bathroom doors did not lock, food was very bland. Either staying here made some of the best memories of my walk.

Day 21: Toshashimizu

Overall: 7/10 Food: None Price: ¥7,000

Such a great experience! House is a little old and shower is a little dirty but overall a comfortable stay. The host is such a cool person to talk to we chatted over a bon fire for hours. Great location its the only stay around this area.

Tip: the walk before this and also after this was extremely long I recommend break up the walk with more stays.

Day 22 & 23: Temple 38

Overall: 8/10 Food: 7/10 Price: ¥34,000 with 2 meals

Amazing location steps from Temple 37. Big fancy hotel with ocean views. Great location near Temple 38 but expect to climb a hill. Food was decent but not mind blowing. I took two nights here to rest. Large Onsen that I was able to use with my tattoos. Big negative for me that the WiFi was awful.

Tip: I took a bus to the next accommodation

Day 24 & 25: Ohana

Overall: 7/10 Food: 9/10 Price: ¥11,000 with 1 meal

This Small rooms but very comfortable - it had everything I needed. The host’s husband is a surprisingly good cook I really enjoyed his breakfast. I don’t think dinner is offered but there are restaurants and stores nearby. Hosts collects a bunch of funky figurines which are fun to look at.

Tip: I stayed two nights so I could walk Temple 39 and back.

Day 26: Temple 40

Overall: 1/10 Food: None Price: ¥7,000

I ended up here by mistake. I messed up my booking and had nowhere else to say. The lady who runs this place is so sweet but she is too old to keep it up. Everything was gross. It was a great location but I didn’t want to touch anything in this place. Don’t stay here unless you have to.

Day 27: Ailin

Overall: 7/10 Food: None Price: ¥6,500

Just a typical cheap hotel. Clean and comfortable enough. Carpets were old and decor was dated but nothing beats having a privet bathroom. I do remember the front desk lady was extremely kind. Good location. No food but great sushi next door.

Day 28: Ohana

Overall: 8/10 Food: None Price: ¥6,500

Clean and comfortable high raise standard hotel. Location in city center with a ton of restaurants and shopping. They had free bath salts in the lobby which was a fun touch. Privet bathroom. Overall a great stay and good value for the price.
